    His early musical journey began in 1956 when he collaborated with Gary Paxton to form the pop duo The Pledges. They later renamed themselves Skip & Flip and achieved some success with songs like "It Was I" and a cover of "Cherry Pie." After a brief hiatus from music, Battin briefly led the folk-rock group The Evergreen Blueshoes in 1967.
